Changing Page Titles
Why do Page Titles Matter?
Every page you visit on the Internet has a Page Title. In most browser configurations the Page Title is located across the top edge of the browser window in what is called the Title Bar in the following format: “Page Title – Browser Name”
Having a well thought out Page Title is import for a number of reasons. The two most important reasons are Usability and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
Usability: In most cases, the purpose of a webpage is to provide visitors with access to information or to allow then to perform some sort of interaction. Because it is always visible, the Page Title is a key tool for informing the visitor what information or interactivity they should expect from the current web page. Keep your Page Titles short, clear and concise.
SEO: Search Engine Optimization represents the sum of all actions taken to improve a web page’s visibility to the various search engines populating the internet. Your Page Title is one of many criteria used by the most prominent search engine on the market when determining your page rank. For consistent results your Page Title needs to be clearly specific to the page content. Use as few words as possible and insure the Page Title would fit seamlessly into the context of the page.
Your Evolve Systems CMS provides you with several methods for changing and customizing your Page Titles. Both site wide and page specific changes are possible. Site wide you are able to define the default format of the page title, what information is used, what order the information is presented and how the information is separated. On a page by page basis you can overwrite the site wide settings, and use whatever information you would like for the page title.
